2.0 update
I bought Mental Case for my desktop and ipod touch last year and want to upgrade to the new 2.0 update. However, Mental Case (desktop) says that I'm "up to date" with version 1.9.4. Is this accurate?

I received a similar message. I bought Mental Case before the appstore application was created. How can I update to 2.0 for free as proposed in appstore ? Thx JL

Hello Drew,
congratulations on MC 2.0.
I couldn´t have wait to buy it. As I tried to import my "old" MC Database, however, MC 2.0 crashed...
I have a pretty large database with over 14.000 flashcards (most of it images). When can we expect a bugfix?
regards

Hi Mike,
I'm afraid the upgrade is only free for those who purchased in 2011. You would need to purchase the upgrade via the Mac App Store. The upgrade check in the old app will not work for the app store.
Kind regards,
Drew

Hmm, any chance of me getting a copy of the library. It's difficult to fix unless we can see what is causing the crash. Best to email us to take this further.

I'm afraid you can only update free if you purchased in 2011. We have special upgrade pricing in place for everyone else for a few weeks.

It's clearly not fair. I purchased the software as every other customers but not on AppStore. By consequence we can't take advantage of this free update. Too bad !!!

We are moving totally to the Mac App Store, and Apple provide no way for us to migrate users across.
If you purchased via the Mac App Store, you can simply go into the Update tab in the Mac App Store, and update there for free.
If you purchased in 2011 from our web store, we can refund your original purchase, and you can then purchase again via the Mac App Store.
Note that Mental Case 2.0 is Mac OS X Lion only.
Would you like a refund to upgrade?
Kind regards,
Drew

I'm using SL and 2.0 in MAS is Lion only. How can I upgrade, as the upgrade pricing is time limited?
Support Staff 9 Posted by drewmccormack on 10 Nov, 2011 07:13 PM
You could login on a Lion machine with your iTunes account, and purchase there. That's the only way I can think of.

Hi Drew
New update looks pretty cool, can't wait to use it.
However, I have to agree with Jean-Louise, it's pretty unfair of having to pay for an update that other customers, who got it through the App store and consequently have been your customers for much less longer, get for free.
I have your app on my phone and iPad and use it on a daily basis.
What do we need to do in order to receive a refund for the "update" price?
Thanks kindly
Lian
Support Staff 11 Posted by drewmccormack on 11 Nov, 2011 07:02 AM
Hi Lian,
It's not unfair. We are offering the free upgrade to people who recently bought the app (i.e., in 2011). It is not fair to make them pay again so soon after their first purchase. That is the way all software upgrades work.
If you purchased in 2011 via our web store, we can arrange an upgrade in an indirect way. Just contact [email blocked] to take it further.
Kind regards,
Drew

I agree with Drew.
This is normal course of business. What way should a developer go to earn a living? When I buy MS Office 2010, I have to pay extra in order to get the 2011 version. We bought a licence for an older version, now we have to pay for a licence for the new version.
Anyway: it would be more helpful to discuss on matters of possible software enhancements/ detected bugs etc than on the payment policy, which is (in my opion) correct.
Regards
Aykut

I purchased from YOUR site, after using YOUR trial, so that YOU would get full price. I paid about a week ago. Now I have to pay full price again? Why did you not direct me to pay through the app store?

Not sure what exactly you are referring to. We have been encouraging people to use the Mac App Store all year. The link to our web store was virtually hidden.
In any case, it is not important, because we are happy to help you upgrade at no cost. Just contact [email blocked] to arrange it.

I appreciate the offer. I am sending the receipt (I had already purchased the upgrade - ) once I get it. I don't know if it's possible to do a refund at this stage, but I appreciate your offering.
I know your link is hidden, but some of us (who do still use trials) do find them. I think it's wise to notify customers that purchasing directly from you may break getting upgrades. If I walked past any such notice, my apologies.

Hi Les,
Our policy is to allow anyone who purchased in 2011 to update at no cost. The logistics are trickier for non-MAS purchases, but it can be arranged.
Kind regards,
Drew

Thanks Drew, and I appreciate your responding so quickly. I'll send you the receipt when I get it.
I do know that the MAP store has brought blessings and problems for developers.
By the way, the 2.0 version rocks. I really needed formatting, bullet points, and the integrated Flashcard exchange interface helps.

Hi Erik,
No, we haven't heard of this.
If it happens again, can you look in the Console utility and tell me if any messages from Mental Case appear there?
If so, can you send them to me?
Kind regards,
Drew

Hi Liz,
Did you receive my last reply? I do think it is possible that something is wrong with your hard drive or graphics card. If it is a new Mac, it might be worth going to an Apple Store with it, and showing the issue to them.
If you want to try reinstalling, just trash the app, and empty trash. Then reinstall from the app store (free).
Your data is not kept in the app.
Kind regards,
Drew

Likewise,
My menu bar has been doing the same since I bought a new computer and re-installed. I have just been ignoring it cause I'm so use to my mental case having issues since the 2.0 update....sorry to say Drew. Also drew, is it not possible to chose my site for the back up of my library any more? I would like to back it up onto my dropbox, but can't seem to find the option to choose a destination (only hundreds of "Recovered Files" in my trashcan)
Thanks,
Erik

Have you installed the 10.7.3 OS X update?
MC 2 has no built in backup. I recommend time machine. You can also copy the library, but it is hidden in lion. To get to it, use Go > Go to Folder in Finder, and enter
~/Library/Application Support/Mental Case

Oh the irony. Spent last 2 hours making a mental case and it crashes, Saying it's unable to save.
The instability of 2.0 is killing me....slowly like type 2 diabetes!
My console is attached Drew.

How do I export a study notes on my macbook pro to Mental case exchange to review on my iPad?
Support Staff 29 Posted by drewmccormack on 26 Mar, 2012 12:25 PM
Hi Trisran,
There is no really easy way to upload to Flashcard Exchange. If you just have text notes, you could export in CSV format, and upload that to the site.
But the best way to get your study notes onto the iPad is to sync over a WiFi network. Connect both devices to the same WiFi network, then choose 'Start Sync' on the iPad from the sharing menu (arrow with box icon). On the Mac, you should see the iPad appear in the left column. Select it there, and follow instructions.
Kind regards,
Drew
