that itself is a collection of cases which in turn hold the stacks.
When choosing to test myself on all the due notes in the "Spanish"
case, the contents are not completely randomized as I would prefer.
Instead, it presents the cards in the first stack of the first case
that is within the "Spanish" case, then proceeds the next stack in
the same subcase, and then when finished with that subcase, goes to
the next, and so on, in order. The app will nonrandomly pick a
stack and then randomly show all the due cards within that stack
before moving on to the next stack in the subcase. So even the
order in which it proceeds to the next subcase is clearly not
random.)

Do I need to put all the cards in a single case in order to have
all the due notes randomly shuffled together in a study session, or
can I accomplish this with the creation of some kind of smart stack
or use of tags?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/398848422016-05-17T07:30:39Z2016-05-17T07:30:39Zrandom presentation of due notes in slide show

Go into the Studies > Preferences and to the Study tab. There
is a setting called 'Group notes by stack'. Uncheck that.

Preferences tab. I use the iOS app to study. Is this not possible
with the phone app?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/398848422016-05-19T05:54:02Z2016-05-19T05:54:02Zrandom presentation of due notes in slide show

Hmm, looks like we didn't add a control for that on iOS. If you
did change it on the Mac, and sync, you should find the iOS app
picks up the setting too.
