stopped' messages. That should really only happen if it is saving,
and the app is interrupted while saving, such as when you kill the
app by swiping it upwards.

Is there anything like that you can think of that might have
happened?

If not, perhaps if this happens again, you could try getting the
console log for me. It would hopefully tell me what was
happening.

It's a bit technical, but if you want to try, you can use
Apple's Configurator to locate the console log on your device.

the home button on the phone and then among the array of whatever
apps are open that appear, swipe on the Studies app to close it. If
that is what you mean by swiping in this case, then I would have to
assume you mean closing it as I just described, and then later,
upon reopening it, the pop up bubble appears. This is certainly
possible, as I have never thought of checking the status of the app
prior to closing it. I just use it and when I am done studying for
the moment, I often close the app until I am ready to resume later.
To avoid closing at the wrong time while some background activity
is going on with the app, what steps should I take? Would it be
best to always go to the menu item named "iCloud Sync" prior to
closing it to make sure there is no progress bar in action? I can
do this if need be.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-05-30T17:01:45Z2016-05-30T17:01:45Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

It is a common misconception that it is good to
‘close’ apps like that. In fact what you are doing is
killing the app immediately, in the middle of whatever it is doing.
That is almost certainly why you see this message, because the app
is being killed before it can save the sync data, and has to
disconnect to ensure your data is preserved and reimported next
time.

You should only ever use that technique of closing apps if the
app is frozen and unresponsive for some time. It is equivalent to
Force Quit on the Mac. Quite dangerous, and likely to cause data
corruption.

iOS handles apps automatically. It will automatically quit them
as needed. You do not have to quit them like on a Mac.

Kind regards,
Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-05-31T00:26:52Z2016-05-31T00:26:52Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

I had no idea. I was used to closing apps in iOS 6 as was on my
iPod Touch prior to getting an iPhone, which was done by
double-clicking the home button and then holding on an open app's
icon until a close option appeared for you to touch. When I moved
to an iPhone 6 (my first smart phone), it was my understanding that
the process was the same, but instead of a touch hold on the icon
for the option to close, you just swiped upward on the app in the
switcher.

Now that you tell me this, I googled it and read up on what you
are talking about. I will stop doing this with your app. I think I
will continue to close some other apps this way as I simply don't
trust them to not somehow abuse this process somehow.

Hopefully this will solve the recurring problem.

What happens if I want to turn my phone all the way off?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-05-31T06:29:33Z2016-05-31T06:29:33Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

I really recommend you not kill apps unless you have a good
reason. A web based app like Facebook can probably be killed
without too much trouble, but anything that is storing data locally
can potentially get corrupted.

If you turn your phone all the way off, the OS lets apps finish
what they are doing (the spinning wheel), so it should be fine.

quit. I accessed it via the switcher selection. I was not on wifi (
cell access on for this app). Possible poor cell signal ( forgot to
check) as I was in checkout line at dept store.

When I last left it, I was in the middle of a study session, at
least that was what showed in the switcher, showing the last
flashcard I had turned to. When I tapped on it from the switcher,
the app switched from the flashcard to the library (it may have
gone to a blank screen first) and then the error popup message
appeared (same one as above).

I'll look into the procedure you linked to get you a log.

EDIT: Good news: iCloud is down for millions, so that is
probably why I got the error, Wait, is that good news? At any rate,
another reason why wifi sync rocks.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-06-03T00:14:44Z2016-06-03T00:14:44Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

after the app store was finally accessible again, I installed

off directly when using Studies? Ie, you are using the app, and
then without pressing home, turn it off?

Just trying to establish what pathway might be triggering
this.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-06-03T13:32:42Z2016-06-03T13:38:25Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

It had been hours since I had used the app, though it was still

If by turning the device off, you mean holding the button on the
right side of the phone until the "slide to power off" option
appears, and using that option, then no. But I have had the studies
app open on the screen and pushed the right button so that the
screen immediately goes black, whatever state that is (I've always
assumed it is sleep).

I tried the Apple Configurator 2 again just now to see how far
back the Console info displayed, and it was only 2 minutes.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-06-03T13:45:14Z2016-06-03T13:45:14Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

Hmm, still a mystery then. If you do ever manage to get the
console logs, it would really help I think.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-06-03T17:40:42Z2016-06-03T17:42:08Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

It may have had to do with the available space in iCloud. It was
down to 60MB available. Although I didn't have any new notes
added-- same deck that has already been stored. I deleted my iphone
backup which took up about 4.5GB.

If I'm near my laptop when it happens again, I'll try to get a
log. It appears that the app will only go back a couple of minutes
from the time the phone is plugged in, if the phone hasn't been
already plugged in previously for around 15 minutes or more. I
noticed this on two attempts where this was the case. However,
after the first time, I can uplug it and wait 10 minutes and plug
it back in, and in these cases i'm getting logs going back 9
minutes. Go figure. Not sure what the rhyme or reason is in
determining this. But it looks like if it happens while I'm right
next to my laptop and I can manage to plug it in within a minutes
time, perhaps I'll have a minutes worth of log to show what
happened.

Maybe I'll take my laptop with me when driving a few places and
try using the app while at stops and see if the various cell
signals trigger any repeat.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-06-04T14:30:04Z2016-06-04T14:30:04Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

I turned the cloud sync back on with the iphone yesterday, but
unfortunately it didn't recognize the data on the phone as being
more current and set me back to where I was when the sync was shut
down the day before (maybe even a little farther back if it was
letting the imac rule in this respect). Sync takes a long time for
the phone-- about 20 minutes. I notice the progress bar moves
across once, then resets and moves across one more time. I'm
guessing this is upload and download, but if not, perhaps it is a
reset of the attempt indicating some problem.

This morning I plugged it into Apple Configurator 2 and then
saved some logs while I opened the app, triggering scheduling and
syncing. I also opened the mac app, and then closed the mac app
which triggered a sync, and fortunately the data does now match the
phone.

I have saved logs of this. Perhaps there is something in the
process of communicating with the cloud that you might see as a
difficulty that the app may be having that could be the cause of it
shutting down, even though it hasn't reoccurred yet.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/399464402016-06-04T14:56:37Z2016-06-04T14:56:37Zmy iPhone Studies app cloud sync was switched off (not by me) after turning on mac Studies app sync

From: drewmccormack tender+dafe93f86f@tenderapp.com
