Could having mac app open while phone app syncs to cloud be a problem with large database?
Or would it actually be helpful? Or no affect either way?
Particularly when turning on phone sync cloud sync back on after it was switched off due to some sync crash.
Does the number of cards studied since prior sync have much impact on the burden placed on the sync (verses just the number of cards overall)?

The sync should not be influenced much by which devices are open. It should not really help or hinder. The sync goes through the cloud, so there is no direct connection.
The number of cards studied does influence sync. That data has to be transmitted over to the other devices. But if you are syncing the whole database again, that will be a much bigger effect than just what you have recently studied.
