what does a dot in front of a stack icon indicate?

Hello,
I think you did mean red dot under cards, isn't it?
Red dots indicate you marked the note 'wrong' last time you studied it. Studying the notes you last got wrong can be a good way to improve on your weak points.

No, a dot next to a stack icon, not a note.

Ah sorry, things got mixed in my mind. For some reason i was thinking you are asking about red dot...
That small dot means the stack is excluded from iCloud sync.
