Thank you for writing in. Since your iPod doesn't support iOS 7
you can't upgrade to the new version on iOS, which is using iCloud
sync as a method of sync. Wifi sync should certainly work with the
newest Mac app, but not with the new iOS app, which only syncs via
iCloud, your older version should work.

What version of the iOS app do you have? 4.6.4?

If you do have the older iOS app, you should be able to tap
start sync and go from there.

Some wifi networks separate devices from computers. Eg colleges,
cafés. In that case, you can make a local wifi net with your
Mac, and connect to it with your iOS device.
In the long run, you are probably better moving to iCloud sync.

Best,

Sam R. — The Mental Faculty support

supporttag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-10T22:29:18Z2014-07-10T22:29:18ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

I have iOS 6.1.6 and it is up to date.
I have version 1.4 of Mental Case 2 running on the iPod.

I update the mac app and it said to use the sync I needed to
update on all devises. Since I hadn't done the iPod update yet, I
chose to turn off the mac cloud sync until I updated the iPod. I
selected to download the update on the iPod, and only then is when
I found out it required iOS7. It would be better if you made this
very clear in advance. But now that it is done, I'm trying to think
how to handle the mac app. I use it to edit and set the scheduling
on my cards. It is much easier to deal with this on the desktop. I
use the iPod for studying and for downloading my stacks, which I
create on Cram.

If I save my library from the new mac app I updated to, and then
uninstall, is it somehow possible to reinstall the previous version
of the mac app that I was using just prior to the free update and
move the library data back in to that? Then I could sync it to the
cloud to match the scheduling data on the iPod.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-11T07:48:27Z2014-07-11T07:48:27ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

I'm sorry about this, but it was really the only way we could
move forward, and quite a few people were having issues with
sync.

Ultimately, I'm afraid the solution would be a new device,
especially with iOS 8 coming. i know that's not what you want to
hear, so here are some other options:

1) I could make the old iOS app available for a day or two, or
if you already have it, you could reinstall that. You could then
use WiFi sync with that app.
2) You could export notes on the Mac app, transfer them with
Dropbox, and import on iOS. Not a real sync, but at least you could
study notes until you get to upgrade to iOS7-8.
3) You could just use the two devices independently for a while,
until you can upgrade.

You can't really downgrade the Mac app, because the data format
has changed, and the old app won't be able to handle the new
data.

Sorry that you have been caught up in this, but there wasn't
really anyway to move forward without leaving a few people
behind.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-11T11:25:11Z2014-07-11T11:25:11ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

So did everyone that did not upgrade lose functioning when the
upgrade was released?

If i can't somehow download the Mental Case 2 version that was
pre-upgrade, I could perhaps use time machine to get it back on my
desktop. Then I would just not upgrade. I just want to get back to
where it was before I made the mistake of upgrading.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-11T11:32:26Z2014-07-11T11:32:26ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

Yes, I'm afraid anyone on iOS 6 will have the same problem. So
you are not alone, but it is no consolation of course.

You can try time machine, yes. You would need to revert

1) The Mental Case app in Applications
2) In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and enter

~/Library/Containers

3) Revert the folder com.mentalfaculty.mentalcase.com

Let me know how this goes.

Again, I'm sorry about this. We needed to move forward, and
there was no way we could bring along the iOS 6 customers.

We would have liked to have warned people about upgrading, but
there is really no mechanism in the App Store to do that.

sent out titled "Sync and Sale Summer." It discussed all the
features and even warned that you need to update on all devices or
sync would no longer work. But what it didn't say, but could have,
is that the iOS update required iOS7. Please keep that in mind for
future announcements.

That said I can buy a new iPod touch. Just hadn't planned to do
it right away.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-11T21:33:55Z2014-07-11T21:33:55ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

That would have helped, true. A lot of people don't get the
emails though, so it wouldn't solve the problem completely.

Time machine may be a good option until you are ready to
upgrade. If you need any help with it, let me know.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-12T00:10:54Z2014-07-12T00:10:54ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

Ok. But I don't know what you mean that there is no mechanism in
the app store to warn people that iOS7 is required if you wish to
sync with the upgrade version of the mac app. If a person, such as
I, tries to download the iOS app first via the app store, it denies
the download saying that it requires iOS7. So that much is in
place. The problem then is if a person, such as I, goes to upgrade
the mac app first, prior to learning of the iOS7 requirement via
the attempt to download the mobile app. In that case that person
will not be warned. But there certainly is the mechanism to warn
them. In fact, you could still fix it. When a person clicks on the
app store and finds Mental Case, there is a description of the app
and the new upgrade. You could simply add to that description that
the syncing with mobile devises will not work unless they use
iOS7.

But again, that said, I don't begrudge your requirement, because
it is necessary to progress the app. Just would have liked the
warning, and others may as well. I'm looking forward to trying the
new app. I'll let you know if I try the time machine solution. But
my iPod is beat up, so I may just keep it in the car with my music
on it and buy a new one.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-12T08:18:52Z2014-07-12T08:18:52ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

I'll try to update the upgrade text, but I fear that is not
allowed after the app goes live.

Even then, a lot of people just hit Update All and don't read
it.

But I agree, I should have l put a warning in there. Wasn't
malicious, just neglectful. Sorry.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-07-14T14:21:24Z2014-07-14T14:34:26ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

Hi,

I
ve just updated the Mac app today and I think you made it
clear now in the description of the update. The warning is very
noticeable, even when I clicked update all, I saw and read the
warning (and found out it didn
t apply to me).

As I care about the apps I like and as I only have a handful of
apps on my Mac (compared to the number of mobile apps), I usually
skim through the update text to see what`s new.

device (iPhone 6) that can use your more current iOS app. My iPod
was too old to install iOS 7, so I had to wait.

The iPod hasI iOS 6.1.6 and it is up to date.
I have version 1.4 of Mental Case 2 running on the iPod.

To recap my problem above, I had upgraded the Mac app with your
new release last July without realizing that doing so would disable
my ability to send data to the cloud from my version 1.4 iOS Mental
Case 2 app. So I am stuck with my most current learning history on
the iOS app without the ability to back it up, and no ability to
upgrade to the new iOS version 1.5.

Am I correct in remembering that even if I delete the newer Mac
app and iCloud data storage, iCloud still will not allow my version
1.4 iOS app to store any data to the Cloud if I try to turn on the
sync??

When I look at your previous replies, I see where you suggested
wifi, but that would mean reverting back to Mental Case 1, and I
don't want to risk that version not being able to handle cards that
were created and studied later on Mental Case 2 Version 1.4.

When I think of my options, I am thinking the best I can do is
to revert back to my learning progress as of the end of June before
I unwittingly upgraded the Mac app, because that is what is
currently stored in the cloud (syncing the iPhone 6 to the cloud
after installing version 1.5).

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732014-12-12T18:39:26Z2014-12-12T18:39:26ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

Hi David,

It’s been a while since we discussed this. I looked back
over the emails.

If I understand, you have two sets of data: one set is on your
iOS 6 iPod, and one is on your Mac.

The following should work:

Make sure you backup your iPod to iCloud and/or
iTunes.

Restore the data from your iPod to your new iPhone 6.

Update to the latest Mental Case on your iPhone 6.

Turn on sync on your iPhone 6 in Mental Case.

If you haven’t already done this, turn on sync switch in
Mental Case on your Mac.

All going well, the cloud data will be merged, and you will have
study history on all devices.

If you have a lot of data, the initial sync could take a long
time. Please just be patient, rather than pressing
‘reset’ or anything like that.

You can see the sync progress in the Library screen, and the
data download progress in the sync screen.

If after an hour or two it still doesn’t seem to be doing
anything, try simply restarting the device, and launch Mental Case
again.

Kind regards,
data for the whole device. You can either backup/restore with
iTunes, or with iCloud.

backup of my iOS 6 iPod Touch, I was able to transfer the old app
and info from the iPod to the iPhone. I then upgraded to the new
app on the iPhone, and that also went well, it appears. I guess I
won't really know until tomorrow if the scheduling transferred as
well, but I presume it did.

I opted not to turn on the iCloud sync just yet. Right now I
have nothing on the iCloud that I need to save. Would it be better
to just delete the current info stored on the Cloud and/or the
ubiquity file on my iMac, just to wipe the iCloud slate clean and
start fresh?

Right now I don't have the desktop app loaded to my iMac yet, as
I did a full system restore and have upgraded to Yosemite. I have
yet to reinstall the desktop Mental Case app.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732015-01-04T21:27:30Z2015-01-04T21:27:30ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

If you have old data in the cloud, it is probably best to delete

time as the new one on the iPhone to see how they compared. The old
one took the usual amount of time to schedule, about 7 1/2 minutes.
However, that was 25 minutes ago, and I've given up on the new one
showing any notes in the Due for Study field. Yet when I checked, I
do see that the new app does show the same number of due notes in
each stack. So there are due notes in the new app, but they aren't
being included in Due for Study. I have 48 notes Due for Study
today in the old app on the iPod.

Has there perhaps been a change with the new app that requires
an iCloud sync before it will categorize notes due?

At this time I'm not using the desktop app so there is no reason
for me to sync, and I have it turned off on the iPhone.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732015-01-05T14:43:24Z2015-01-05T14:43:24ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

Are you certain that there are no due notes in Due Notes? Maybe
the problem is a bug where the count is not being updated properly.
Have you tried going into the Due Notes folder to see if there are
due notes there?

7 1/2 minutes is a very long time for an update. It should take
at most about 30 seconds. (Again, it could be that the counts are
not updating, but the update has actually been done.)

If you have iCloud sync on, it will try to sync before it does
an update, to try to avoid doing it twice. Usually a sync should
not take more than about 10 seconds, but when you are first getting
things up and running, there can be quite a bit of data transfer
back and forth.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/337244732015-01-05T15:37:14Z2015-01-05T15:37:14ZSo I waited for the update, but I have to have iOS7?

Yes, they were in there. You were right it was a bug. Once I
exited the folder the count now shows and it matches the count on
the iPod. So all is well.

It has always taken that long to schedule notes on my iPod on
the old app. I'll see how the new app fares tomorrow and let you
know.
