Apple is pushing iCloud drive pretty hard so eventually you'll
have to move over. Since it's introduction we're experiencing more
issues with the 'plain' iCloud. We did introduce Dropbox sync as an
alternative, that might be best for you at this point since you're
holding of switching for now.

turned on the desktop app since the switch to iCloud Drive had
enabled the on/off switch for sync. The app indicated it was
syncing, then said all cloud info had fully downloaded. Yet clearly
it had not, because no cards showed in the desktop app. So I waited
a while, but no change. I tried to close the app to restart, but it
didn't respond. Perhaps it was still in the middle of syncing, I
don't know, but it didn't indicate this when I went to Sync to
check for status feedback. Though it did let me turn iCloud sync
on, the switch was now disabled again, so I could switch it off to
see if turning it off and on again might pull the cards from the
cloud. Finally, the app closed. When I reopened, still no cards.
This time I left it open and did some surfing on Safari for a
while, and while doing so , a Mental Case crash report appeared
saying the app had quit unexpectedly. This report was sent to
you.

I believe it was after this that I reopened the app and after a
while the cards appeared on the app. However, today, I opened my
iPhone first and let it schedule cards, which totaled 56 due. I
waited a while and then turned on the desktop app, and it scheduled
around 40, and then after another minute 135 showed due. So they
were not in sync. I gave it more time, but still no sync to my
phone. So I turned off the sync on the desktop, which it now
allowed me to do, closed the app, reopened it and turned the sync
back on to see if it would pull iPhone data from the cloud. After
about 20 minutes, the desktop still shows 135 and the phone still
shows 56.

I'm scratching my head still trying to understand why cloud sync
is better than wifi sync for this app. I can't imagine that the
majority of people study on desktop apps on two different networks.
So in my mind, that means most people are like me, where syncing
involves a desktop and a mobile device. So it's not like I'm not
going to have my mobile device handy for a wifi sync when I return
to my desktop-- that's they point, they are mobile. It's also not
as if I am going to find the wifi sync inconvenient as compare to
iCloud-- nothing could be further from the truth. The wifi synced
on demand and took no time at all.

Why do you bother with iCloud sync for this app and be subject
to the changes and whimsy of Apple's cloud when it creates far more
problems and inconvenience to the majority of users who are not
studying on multiple non-mobile desktop apps? I can only conjecture
that like you just like the challenge of trying to create an app
that uses the cloud, yet the cloud adds nothing to this
application, except to a small, unlikely, group of users for whom
this might offer some advantage over the simplicity of a wifi
sync?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-19T19:31:57Z2015-01-19T19:31:57Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

PS: I have left the desktop app up and running because a little
blue progress bar (or grey if the app is not running in the
foreground) keeps popping up in the top right corner of the app,
moving from short to long and then disappearing, all within a split
second. I thought perhaps this means that something is happening
with a cloud sync or sorting of data in the app.

Then I realized I can trigger this progress bar action by
clicking on the open Mental Case window and then clicking on a
Safari window. The click on Safari instantly triggers the progress
bar to quickly pop up, grow from short to long, and quickly
disappear. The bar will still occasionally appear on Mental Case in
the background without me leaving Safari, but I can trigger it
every time by the action I described.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T02:13:06Z2015-01-20T02:13:06Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

I noticed a reset button in the Sync feature of both apps, so I
clicked reset on the desktop app, then waited about 30 minutes and
clicked the reset on the iOS app. Then a couple of hours after
that, I turned the sync switch back towards the right on the iOS
app, which I assume to be on, though instead of green, it turns on
a red color. Since I have no documentation to tell me what this
mean, and because it is also flickering from time to time between a
faint red and a bright red, I'm assuming it is indicating that the
process of establishing the transfer of data to iCloud Drive is
still in progress. Nevertheless, it's been over 30 minutes since I
switched it on (or what I think is on) and it is still showing
red.

When i go to iPhone Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive , it
still shows both iCloud Drive and Mental Case switched to ON.

On the iMac, when I go to System Preferences > iCloud >
Manage, I see there is data being stored for Mental Case (about
330MB), so data presumably has moved from my phone to the cloud,
since the reset process I did earlier warned that it would delete
all data from the cloud.

I this sync switch on the iPhone app eventually supposed to
change from red to green?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T05:18:03Z2015-01-20T05:18:03Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Hi Zeppo,

I'm sorry for your continued issued. Sounds like something did
get messed up. Please don't use the reset button too much, as it
will create more instances of your data before being able to clear

reset:

Can you try resetting the sync data on all your devices, like
this

1) Press the Reset button in the iCloud settings of Mental Case

2) Wait 30 minutes
color is indicating. Is this the color it is supposed to be? Or
should it be green. There is no documentation about this in your
Help section, so I have no idea what the answer is. There is no use
of words "ON" and "OFF" as there is with the Desktop app. I can
only assume that "ON" is having the switch in the same position as
with the Desktop app, which is to the right, with OFF being to the
left. Yet when the switch is moved to the right on the iOS app, the
area to the left of the switch turns red. Okay, this doesn't sound
like "ON" to me. But if I move the switch to the left side instead,
there is no green color, as there is with similar switches in the
iPhone Settings app. So what am I to conclude? Is the red color
indicating to me that there is a problem? Is the red color telling
me that it is ON? Is the red color telling me that a sync is in
progress? What is it telling me?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T06:29:04Z2015-01-20T06:29:04Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Oh, and the reset option is greyed out and disabled, or I would
have already tried it a second time anyway. But instead, I had to
go to iPhone Settings> General > Usage > Manage Data, and
then delete the Mental Case data. This by the way, warns me that
all data will be deleted not only from the cloud but from all
devices as well, which would be very disconcerting if I did not
know that I still had all my data safely stored on my iPod, which
can't be touched by the cloud. This warning was also given when I
clicked on reset the first time aroundd. At any rate, after
proceeding with this did NOT result in deleting all my data from my
devices, so I do not know why that warning is included. It should
either be removed or clarified.

Please let me know what the red is indicating, so I will know
whether I have switched sync on or off, and I will also know
whether this is indicating some kind of pending condition during
which, for example, I am not to turn off my app. There is zero
explanation.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T14:26:47Z2015-01-20T14:26:47Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

After initiating the double reset procedure you gave, and since
I still have no answer about what the red means, I'm going to
presume it means that a sync is in progress or yet to be completed
in entirety with the cloud, and hold off turning on the sync on the
desktop app. I come to this conclusion because I have about the
cloud held about 120-130MB of data with iPod app in that past.
After turning on the iOS app sync and waiting 20 minutes, the iMac
system preferences > iCloud > Manage reveals cloud drive is
currently only storing about 17MB of data. This is way low. It
would appear that the iOS app has not yet transferred all the data
to the cloud drive that it needs to. So if true, turning on the
desktop sync at this time would not be productive as I see it.

Perhaps Drew knows what the red color on the sync switch is
trying to indicate to me. Is he still with you guys?

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T15:42:04Z2015-01-20T15:42:04Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Ok, after another hour, the amount of data stored in iCloud
Drive now shows 35MB. So this indicates that data transfer is still
going on. Therefore, since I haven't heard back from you or Drew, I
will assume that the red color does indeed indicate that a sync to
transfer data from device to iCloud Drive is not yet complete. So I
am not going to activate the sync on the desktop.

I am guessing this will take all day. Nice.

Suggestion: Get rid of whatever programming you have in place
that causes the Cloud Sync window on the app to display : : "Cloud
data is fully downloaded." Obviously this serves no purpose at this
time other than to mislead the user with misinformation.

So I am going to presume that eventually sometime later today,
the color on the switch will change from red to green, and when I
check the cloud data at that point, it should show somewhere around
110 to 135MB of data being stored. At that point, I'll activate the
desktop app, which I assume will take as long as the iOS app did.
Hopefully, as long as I don't close the apps, I will still be able
to use other apps in the foreground while this does its thing in
the background.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T19:45:22Z2015-01-20T19:45:22Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

after a number of hours, no change in the 35MB on the cloud.
Color still red on iPhone sync switch. I went ahead and turned on
the desktop app sync anyway to see the results. But an hour after
that, no change in the 35MB stored on the cloud, and no change in
the data appearing in either the desktop or iPhone app. The iPhone,
which has the current data, shows 46 cards due, while the desktop
still shows old data of 159 cards due.

Still not knowing what the red is indicating on the switch, I'm
just going to reset again and this time turn my iPod off just in
case it is somehow affecting the cloud, which it should not since
you disabled cloud sync possibilities from that old app. I'm also
going to use the iPod to delete the 35MB of cloud data first.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T20:00:43Z2015-01-20T20:00:43Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Well, that wouldn't work. There wasn't an option to delete the
cloud data via the iPod, but that is actually a good sign,
indicating hopefully that the iPod is not interfering in this
process. But when I next went to turn off or reset the sync on the
desktop app, I found both options disabled. The phone reset was
enabled (though the switch still red, so I reset it. The result was
not a deletion in the data from the cloud as the a prompt on the
device warned, but rather simply a reduction in the amount of data
stored down to 29MB. The desktop app still does not have the sync
switch enabled to allow me to turn of the sync.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-20T20:02:51Z2015-01-20T20:02:51Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

I take that back. In the time I typed the above, I immediately
check the storage again and the Mental Case data has been deleted

App Store > Automatic Downloads > Apps switched to ON?

I can't imagine why this would be the case, since this is
referring to the automatic download/install to the iPhone of apps
purchase through iTunes/App Store on other devices. This should
have nothing to do with iCloud data, however, just covering the
bases. I keep it switched off because I do not want all my apps on
all my devices. Nor do I want updates automatically installed,
because a lot of times they turn out to be worse. So I have that
switched off as well.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T09:37:32Z2015-01-21T09:37:32Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Hi Zeppo,
I'm scratching my head still trying to understand why cloud sync is
better than wifi sync for this app. I can't imagine that the
majority of people study on desktop apps on two different networks.
So in my mind, that means most people are like me, where syncing
involves a desktop and a mobile device.

Not necessarily. One downside of the old sync was that an iPhone
could not sync with an iPad, for example. I estimate around 80% of
our customers don’t have a Mac.
Why do you bother with iCloud sync for this app and be subject to
the changes and whimsy of Apple's cloud when it creates far more
problems and inconvenience to the majority of users who are not
studying on multiple non-mobile desktop apps? I can only conjecture
that like you just like the challenge of trying to create an app
that uses the cloud, yet the cloud adds nothing to this
application, except to a small, unlikely, group of users for whom
this might offer some advantage over the simplicity of a wifi
sync?

That’s the thing. The group of people who want cloud sync
is not small. Most of our users have no use for WiFi sync, having
no Mac. And even if they did, there were always complaints they had
to turn on a Mac, and have the iPhone on at the same time. Then do
it all over again for the iPad. It doesn’t scale, and that is
why it is going out of fashion.

It seems to me that most of the problems you are having are due
to switching sync on/off. That causes everything to start again,
and can cause iCloud to throttle back transfer. You should just
turn it on, and wait. Yes, the first sync can take a while, but
after that it should be pretty fast.

The red color is normal. It is the ‘tint color’ of
the app. The whole app is tinted like that, and it has no special
meaning.

You are way overthinking this. The best approach is
patience.

So what I suggest is this:
1. Press reset on all your devices
2. Wait 30 minutes
3. Press reset on all devices again
4. Turn on sync for the device with most data (probably Mac)
5. Wait 10 minutes
6. Turn on sync on iPhone

Then just wait. Don’t switch things. Don’t change
iCloud settings. Don’t reset. It will eventually sync up. Can
take a little while, especially if you have been messing with the
sync.

If it hasn’t synced up after about an hour, just restart
your iPhone, and open MC to see if it will sync up then.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T10:56:01Z2015-01-21T10:56:01Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

If it worked, I wouldn't be thinking about it at all. I not only
waited, I waited hours. I dared not switch things, because the
uncertainty of the red color, where green is used on switches in
the iCloud Settings, left me to wonder if this was indicating that
the sync was still in progress. But hours without a change at all
in the data on the cloud should be enough time. I then tried the
closing and reopening of both programs, and also full shutdowns and
restarts of both iMac and phone. But nothing worked.

I'll try it again. This time I also logged out of iCloud on both
devices and then logged back in.

I did not know that the pre-cloud iOS app was incapable of
syncing with another iOS app on another device. But as far as
complaints about having to have both a mac and IPhone on at the
same time, who doesn't have their phone on at the same time anyway?
And it can't be much harder to turn on an iPad to sync it when you
sit down to the desktop app. I would give 10 minutes of time to
that each day to have a reliable sync that one that doesn't work at
all, or it unreliable when it does (If I can ever get it to work, I
guess I'll find out.)

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T10:59:31Z2015-01-21T10:59:31Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Actually, I've had the iPhone app sync switched on for 30
minutes now, and when I check the cloud data, there is still
nothing there at all for Mental Case. So there's no point in me
turning on the sync for the desktop app yet. Its the iPhone data
that is up to date and needs to get transferred to the desktop.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T11:01:04Z2015-01-21T11:01:04Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

You can’t trust the iCloud data setting in general. May

programmed into the iPhone app.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T14:10:35Z2015-01-21T14:10:35Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

An hour, the blue status bar at the top right of the desktop app
is gone, indicating its sync is finished. The storage in the cloud
drive now shows 35MB. Yet the notes due on the desktop app have not
changed to match the due notes on the iPhone. I have 34 due on the
phone, which is current. But the desktop still shows the 188 notes
due, which is not current (and represents a backlog of due notes
that have accumulated on the desktop app since I installed it.)

So without overthinking this, how many hours should I give this
desktop app to sync up with the iPhone? I'll go ahead and study the
notes due on the phone and see if that triggers a sync to the cloud
which is then transferred to the desktop, but frankly, it seems
unlikely this will occur.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T15:16:59Z2015-01-21T15:16:59Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

I suspect the two will sync up at some point. The iOS app
sometimes doesn’t refresh the interface well, and so the
number changes, but you don’t see it. We have a fix coming
for that.

I don’t know if you will end up with 34 notes, or 188
notes. There is no real way for the app to know whether to favor
the iPhone or the Mac, so it could be you just end up with the 188
notes. But if you study in future, things should go as
expected.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T15:49:04Z2015-01-21T15:49:04Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Well, I checked it and it did sync up, but in the wrong
direction, and oddly enough, with an extra card due on the iPhone
to boot.

The iPhone now shows 189 due and the iMac still shows 188. It
used to be a window would pop up asking whether you wanted to keep
the data on the device of the cloud. Has that been eliminated?

Keep in mind I never study on the desktop. I only edit cards on
it. So ultimately I need the study history on the iPhone to move to
the mac. New cards are added by way of iCram decks I have created
which are then uploaded to the iPhone. These also then need to be
synced to the iMac. Card edits and reorganization are done on the
iMac, and these then need to make it to the IPhone.

Now I do have my current study history essentially matched on my
iPod, so I could backup the iPod and the restore my iPhone to that
backup to return a current study history to the iPhone. But it
seems likely that I would wind up with the same problem of that
newly restored study history not making it to the iMac, but instead
being replaced with the iMac data on the cloud because there is no
longer that option presented that asks whether I want to keep
device data or cloud data.

I suppose I will just try to study the 188 cards and mark cards
wrong that I remember getting wrong in the last week so that they
reappear for testing again at shorter intervals rather than a much
longer time from now.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-21T15:50:29Z2015-01-21T15:50:29Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

PS: the desktop now shows 189 due to match the phone.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T02:33:58Z2015-01-22T02:33:58Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

I went ahead and restudied the cards from the desktop app that
were loaded to the phone. Then I checked for a sync up. I had to
shut down the phone and then restart it and the program to trigger
a sync, but after about 5 minutes a sync finally occurred on the
desktop app so now both appear to be in sync with zero cards
due.

I'll see how the scheduling compares tomorrow morning. It
appears everything will be okay, so thanks for helping me. It's not
over yet though because I still have to see how things will work
when I start editing cards and loading new decks, etc, so I'll keep
my fingers crossed.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T06:56:41Z2015-01-22T06:56:41Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Please try to avoid killing or force quitting. That can lead to
corruption, and if the app detects that the crash is a problem, it
will actually start syncing all over again.

Best to be patient. The app runs a sync to look for new data
every minute, so you shouldn't have to do anything. If you think it
is taking way too long, just restart the whole device. But it
should not be needed.

Kind regards,
Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T13:50:28Z2015-01-22T13:50:28Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

they both synced ok this morning. I turned the iPhone first and
let it schedule and then turned on the iMac. It's scheduling
matches the iPhone. Of course, the iPod which has the correct
scheduling that the iPhone originally matched only has 38
scheduled. I'm gong to work that independently for a while for a
backup.

It seems to me that there is a bug you should look into that
caused the cloud to keep the iMac data rather than the iPhone data
in the initial sync.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T13:54:12Z2015-01-22T13:54:12Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

It’s not a bug. They are two independent data sets, and
there is no correct answer to which should get priority. The sync
algorithm has no idea when you created the data, and thus which is
more recent, because it wasn’t ‘observing’ the
data to begin with.

In any case, it is only really a problem for people who have
their data on different devices before they start syncing. Most
don’t have that.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T16:20:42Z2015-01-22T16:20:42Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Well, originally I didn't have data on both.

My iMac initially did not even have the app installed, because I
had restored my iMac to a clean install prior to a Yosemite
upgrade, and had no external programs added to it other than
Adobe.

Then I restored my new iPhone to my iPod back up via iTunes in
order to transfer the Mental Case data to it (the iPod data was not
stored in the cloud because the sync to cloud was disabled when you
came out with Version 2 and I deleted iCloud data prior to the
phone restore as well.)

After I got the data on the phone, I synced the phone to the
cloud. Then I studied on the phone for a number of days before I
even installed the desktop app to my iMac. When I installed the
desktop app back onto my clean install of Yosemite, I then turned
on its sync, but instead of matching the iPhone, it had a lot more
cards showing as due. Piecing this together now, I believe that the
iPhone had stopped syncing to the cloud (unbeknownst to me since it
was still turned on) a number of days prior , or perhaps it had
never synced to the cloud and somehow I still had my iPod data
loaded as some function of the restore of the backup to the new
phone.

Of course, when I did the recent resets of the cloud on both
devices, there was data loaded on the desktop app afterwards, so
what you say makes since for that occurrence.

At any rate, I occasionally use time machine to restore to a
clean install on my iMac if sluggishness crash issues start with
Safari, etc, and I need to try to determine the cause
This is the reason I reverted to a clean install of Mavericks prior
to Yosemite. I may have to do it again as I reload a few more
programs if the Safari issues return.

I may have to do this anyway, as there are some cards that
somehow had their schedules reset as a result of all this.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T16:49:00Z2015-01-22T16:49:00Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Of you do restore a backup, you should turn the sync switch in
MC off first. Otherwise it will likely get messed up.

will end up having to setup the whole sync again. If there are just
a few problem cards, I would simply study them and not restore the
whole library.

Drew

drewmccormacktag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-22T17:33:03Z2015-01-22T17:33:03Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Yes, that is what i am hoping is the case. I went through the
"Recently Studied" and looked at the information. A number of them
somehow got their scheduling history wiped, but even more odd is
that the Next Scheduled: date shows January 19th 2015. Yes, 2015,
not 2016. Also, though I graded them correct yesterday, they
reappeared today, and despite grading them correct again today ,
the next scheduled date has not changed. Fortunately, many of these
are very easy cards for me now. I may just delete them, or move
them to a separate "problem" stack, and remove them from
scheduling. Others I will just recreate I guess. There are about
20.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/358048272015-01-25T14:29:55Z2015-01-25T14:29:55Zcan't flip on the Sync on Mental Case 2.7.1

Things seem to be syncing nicely now. One thing I did find out
after taking a closer look was that the cards that wrongly had
their scheduling reset during this process were all the last cards
in their respective stacks. Yet, thankfully, it didn't affect the
last card in every stack. I still have to test how the sync handles
new cards and edits, but I am optimistic it will have no
problems.

zeppo
