size of "screen" projections with Mental Case on iOS devices
ok, this is another one.
I use to video project my MC flashcards on the wall with both an iPod touch and iPad mini.
Obviously, I'm using the same MC database and flashcards in both iOS devices.
When using the iPad mini, I'm getting nice-looking, almost square-like projections with a full-screen image, but when using the iPod touch, first of all, the UI is different (very rectangular shape) and MC is projecting the images with a huge white margin, making the image a lot smaller, which is very annoying when reviewing.
I simply think it's due to the different layout of the flashcards in MC on the different iOS devices (which is partly understandable, because they're of different sizes), but why automatically reducing the image in iPod touch?
I'm adding a screenshot of my iPod touch.
As you can see, there's a big white margin that belittles the image when being projected.
I don't have this problem with the same flashcards on a iPad mini

Yes, that does look quite big.
Is the iPad mini margin the same width, but just looks smaller because there is more space? It wouldn't surprise me if the number of pixels margin is actually the same.
I will enter this as a bug.
Kind regards,
Drew

thanks.
Actually, the flashcard layout of MC on the iPad mini is more square-like in appearance than the iPod touch's one, which is really kinda "banana-rectangular".
In any case, projecting the image with an iPad mini almost entirely fills up the flashcard's space, with an equal small white margin around.
Unfortunately, I don't have my iPad mini anymore, I could have uploaded a screenshot otherwise.
I'd be very happy could this be fixed on Studies for iPod touch.

I've now fixed this, and it will be in the next minor update.

Hi,
I'm using the iOS beta right now, and still have the white band issue.
Just another thing : I join 2 screenshots, one from a facet in studies iOS and another being the same facet in keynote iOS. As you can see, the latter is notably bigger in size. This is a very visual difference when projecting flashcards, as I do.
Couldn't there be a way to have a similar layout (or at least an option) as in keynote, which is almost square-like and not the utterly stretched one of Studies ?

I did increase the size of the image area in landscape orientation. Can’t remember if it made it into that build.
Comparing to keynote doesn’t make a lot of sense, because keynote has a much simpler task: just project slides one after the other as large as possible.
That is not the task of this app. It is not presentation software, and has a lot more peripheral features that are needed to track study etc. It is not ideal as presentation software.
Note that you can double tap an image to see it enlarged, and even zoom in. As far as I know, Keynote doesn’t do that.
Kind regards,
Drew

I am going to look into this again. I am fairly certain I increased the size of image area for landscape, but it is smaller than I expected, so maybe the fix went missing.

I found the image size fix I made. It is in Mental Case, and has not appeared in a release yet. I will add it to Studies too.

ok,
maybe managing image sizes in a given facet and given orientation could be offered as a feature for the user, who could apply this as a template to the stacks desired ?

Hi, just wanted to add my (last) 2 cents on this.
If a feature-less app as Flashcard hero DOES allow the user to manually resize an image in the question facet, how come Studies doesn't ? Doesn't seem like a big deal to implement, no ?
Support Staff 11 Posted by drewmccormack on 15 Mar, 2016 02:03 PM
I haven’t used flashcard hero in a long time, but it is just simple cards, with a single layout, right? They don’t have a real study or organizational mode?
We do allow you to resize facets, but you can’t resize the image independent of the other stuff. Note that quicklook should work on facets, so you should be able to get a good preview at all times if that is important.

=> yea it's rather basic
you can’t resize the image independent of the other stuff.
=> that's exactly my request : it'd allow me to set the (maximum- or other- size) for each card or apply it as a template. I'm still waiting to see how your fix turns out when Studies is updated, but I was surprised that Flashcard would offer this to the user, basic as it is...

You are comparing apple’s and oranges. They have a much more freeform layout engine, like Keynote, if I recall. That has some advantages, and other disadvantages. Our system is designed to show content in different contexts (eg on iPad, iPhone, Mac, in card browser), so we try not to impose specific layout. You control content, but you don’t control layout of the content.
If you want full control over layout, you can go with keynote (or FCH), but you have to give up on other things. You can’t really have both.
