Did anyone else buy the original Mental Case app, only for Mental Case 2 to come out which you had to buy again? The developers have now done it once again with "Studies" which is replacing Mental Case 2 but isn't available for free to users who have already bought Mental Case. At the price of these apps, this is shocking.

Well, I bought the original Mental Case in 2008, version 2 in 2013, and now Studies in 2016. So, 2 paid upgrades over an 8 year period is not unreasonable in my opinion. The iPhone and iPad apps were also sold separately, but the cost of those was minimal. Studies is gorgeous. The developers have clearly put a lot of time and effort into cleaning up and modernizing the interface, and the aesthetics of a program I spend a lot of time in is important to me. So, overall, I'm very happy with the new version, and I don't mind paying for the continued development.

The original Mental Case came out in 2006.

Mental Case 2 was a paid upgrade, in 2011.

Now Studies is a paid upgrade, in 2016.

In other words, every 5 years we ask people to pay an upgrade. That is not uncommon for Mac software, and is unfortunately the only way for us to keep developing the software.

I'm quite serious about the latter — without upgrade income from Studies, we would have shut down Mental Case altogether. Sad, but true. Software does not write itself.

I bought Mental Case 2 in December of 2013 for $29.99, paid an upgrade fee of $4.99 in January of 2014 (I believe for the iOS version), and then purchased Studies for $24.99. I don't think this is a lot to pay considering what I'm getting out of the app and all the work that's going into it. If you do a little research, it doesn't take long to realize that there are no flash card apps out there that do what this app does. I have no problem whatsoever supporting the continuing development of this application so we can have it for many years to come.
