syncing tags
It appears that when i delete tags with the mac app, the action is not syncing to the iphone app, and worse, are getting reinstated on the mac. Seems to take multiple attempts and syncing to get it to work.

I don't know anything about how the cloud works. Is there a way to be sure it is completely wiped clean and reload it? Is at all possible there are relics of old versions of mental case and studies on there that it is trying to sync to as well as the current one, or that it is trying to sync to my old apple ID email addresses in addition to the current one (that should be impossible, but I just don't know). I changed email addresses for the sole reason of this app's long sync.

Studying on the Mac shouldn’t make any difference, I don’t think.
The fact that you turn off networking while studying will mean that when the sync does come, it will be longer. Normally, it syncs every 10 notes or so while studying, so it will be uploading a little at a time. Though indeed that can be interrupted. I still wouldn’t expect more than a minute or so of uploads after a study session. And making a few notes the same.

I don’t think there is anything you can really do about it. If it does actually sync, I would assume your iCloud is OK.
I have a new reset in the next version, which is more thorough than the old one. If there are old remnants, that should clear them. We’ll see I guess.

Is it possible my iphone is treating every sync as if it is an initial sync, so that I am experiencing the kind of sync times you had on your initial syncs *every* time?

If there was a problem, that could be a reason for such a long sync. But a good reset should fix any issue like that, because it clears all local and cloud sync data.
I still haven’t seen any issues today after my tests. I think I will release what I have on Monday. There were a few fixes, plus the better resetting. Then I recommend you do the reset on each device. Maybe that, perhaps with the few fixes that have come in, will help. The sync framework I use has a few new fixes too, so who knows.

Had another thought: when I synced with my iPhone today, it paused a long time during the upload of data. My iPhone had the low power mode turned on, and that can cause the system to restrict iCloud and other services.
Is it possible your long syncs could be happening in low power mode?
Kind regards,
Drew

Did you try deleting tags from smart stack cards and see if you have any issues with them reappearing?
Particularly, when I have clicked on my COMP - SMART STACK and gone into a card to view it, then deleted the COMP tag via the info icon, then swiped to go to the next card with the info panel still open and deleting that card's COMP tag, and so on through multiple cards, the tags end up reappearing later, with the cards back in the smart stack.
Try deleting about 10 this way before you put the reset fix in place and let me know what happens. It might be useful to know what happens before and after your reset fix.
I tested it again today, and deleted all but one COMP tag. After studying all due notes on the iphone, syncing the iphone to the cloud, and then syncing the mac app, all the COMP tags returned (although the due notes synced fine to zero notes due on the mac)

I suspect a sync issue for this, which is why I didn’t make it a priority to look at it. Was more focused on tracking the sync problems.
To test if this is the case: if you remove a tag, swipe to the next note, and then swipe immediately back, is the tag still gone, or has it already come back? (That would point to a UI issue, not a sync issue)
Or does the tag appear only later, after a sync? (This would point to a sync issue)

yes, it's definitely a sync problem. The question is is it a sync problem you will have as well , or a problem only I have. Then the question is whether it is something in the code that will occur whether my other problem with long sync times is solved or not. Or is it a problem that exists as a result of the other problem I have with long sync times? It might offer some clue as to what is going on, and all it takes to test is to delete some tags.

My feeling is that it is very likely to be related to the long sync.
The long sync suggests it is playing back your whole history. In other words, it is playing back the creation of the tag, and later it will play back the deletion. So the tag reappears.
In normal syncing, this should be very rare, and self correcting, but your issues are making it apparent.
I have submitted my changes to Apple today. I suggest you get the new versions in a day or two, completely reset the cloud, and see if it is any better.
I haven’t seen any sync longer than about a minute in a week of daily tests. On Mac it is probably max of about 10 secs. I saw longer syncs on iOS of up to a minute or two. Never any thing near 30 minutes. But again, I did make some changes, so who knows, I may have fixed the issue in the version I was testing.

I tested deleting and adding tags (for about the 5th time ) today, editing on the mac, syncing mac, and then syncing the iphone.
The iphone sync didn't take forever (I didn't have my eye on it, but it wasn't more than 5 minutes) and so far it has worked. The tags are gone on the iphone and mac. So hopefully they don't reappear after tomorrow's scheduling of new notes and sync-- don't know why it would.
