"Studies Backups" folder

I see now from an article on her that this is where the mac app keeps a backup that it creates each time before syncing to the cloud

But why do I have for folders within it, which I presume are backups , one named "Library_2018-04-21_16-45_23s.studielib" and the three others named similarly, but with different dates? The one with the most recent activity is named accordingly with the date May 23, 2018. If its creating a backup every time it syncs, why is the last activity May 23rd, and why four folders?

It doesn't backup before every sync, because that would involve an enormous amount of work and data. It is only created when you turn the sync switch on. Probably May 23 was the last time you turned the sync switch on.
