It's a bit difficult to check the sync is completely successful though, without a Mac.

There is no built in backup on iOS, but you could use an app like iExplorer to locate and copy the data. You may even be able to access the data with the iOS Files app, since it is in the Documents folder. Just try to go to the Documents folder of Studies, and if you see Library.studieslib, copy that elsewhere (don't move — copy)

on the iphone, I see that there is an option to set it to either iCloud Drive or "On My Phone" . Mine is set to iCloud Drive.

Right now, iCloud Sync is still turned off on the iphone app after the crash shut it down. (mac app not installed).

When I open the Files app on the iphone and open the location "iCloud Drive", there is no "Studies" folder there. When I instead open the location "On My Phone", I do find a "Studies" folder. Inside that is a folder named Library.studies lib with 8 items inside:
SyncedData 2:42pm 3.8 MB SyncedData 12:27pm 94.4 MB SyncedData 12:26pm 33 KB Data 12:26PM 33 KB Data 11/8/18 8 KB Data 10/15/18 266 KB

I also see when I go into iCloud > Manage Storage in the Settings app that Studies is storing 39.1MB

Are you saying that 39.1 MB would have all my content (text on the cards) and scheduling data?

Finally when I go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Studies,
I see that I have 716.MB of Documents and Data stored. Below that is a "RECOMMENDATIONS" panel that shows six .sqlite files that I have no idea what is the point of them being shown. They are all dated as Sept 27 2018.

Is this the kind of settings and data I should be seeing?
What would be the difference if I chose "On My Phone " instead?

I'll go ahead and load up the mac app and see what the scheduling says there on the cards I took note of. I'll probably have to do the cloud reset. Then I'll experiment with another study session where it turns midnight while in progress with about half the notes in the session still unstudied.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/467652432019-01-09T08:28:39Z2019-01-09T08:28:39Zis there a way to export and save an iOS app backup sans macOS app ...

I think you are seeing a bunch of different types of data there. Studies will not store your database in the cloud regardless of settings you choose. That must be for some other types of data. Studies will have a local copy of the data in a folder called Library.studieslib, which indeed includes SyncedData. I think the ones with the times on them are backups made by iCloud, so perhaps you were checking the backups instead of the actual current data.

I had reset cloud sync on both iphone and macbook about a year ago and never turned them back on (and I deleted the app's library folder on the macbook). Would the iOS app have still been sending this sync data to the cloud?

At any rate, after backing up the iphone, I decided to turn on sync on the phone, let it complete, and then turn on sync on the macbook (which took about an hour and ten minutes). I had been wanting to switch to using the macbook app in order to study notes whose scheduling was thrown off by a bug that you finally corrected a while back (where it continued to schedule notes as if graded correct after they were changed back to incorrect grades). Then I'll sync back to the reset phone later on and start using that exclusively again.

zeppotag:mentalfaculty.tenderapp.com,2010-10-19:Comment/467652432020-01-18T14:28:34Z2020-01-18T14:28:34Zis there a way to export and save an iOS app backup sans macOS app ...

Resetting indeed removes all cloud data, so sync would not bring it back. Only if sync is turned on will it store data in the cloud.
