prevent blank facets from showing up on slide show
I have a 4 facet template – 1) word (term), 2) definition, 3) alternate word (term), and 4) note. Facets 3 and 4 are often blank. Yet when I go into slide show mode they appear. This causes a problem as when they are present I would like them to appear and be usable as prompts. However, when they are blank I would like the slide show to skip them.
I have tried taking one stack and deleting unused facets from the stack. This solves my above listed problem, in that the blank facets no longer show up in the slideshow; however, if I make updates to the template my facets (specifically 3 and 4) get relabeled (mislabeled), i.e. my facet 4 gets labeled "facet 3" and takes on the formatting of an alternate word. This is a real problem as I like to make changes to the template as I work.

The solution is indeed just to delete any empty notes.
Templates are applied for each of the facets in the original note. So when creating a new template, make sure it is created with all 4 facets. In other words, choose a note with 4 facets, edit it how you want it, and then save the template.

Thank you so much for your response. It's very disappointing not to have the
flexibility to have stacks with a varying number of facets without risking
the template override. Feature request to have slide shows ignore black
facets?

It doesn't make much sense to us do this. A lot of people would like to know of there is a blank facet, so they can remove it. Each facet is also scheduled separately, so having blank ones messes up the study scheduling. Better to just be a bit careful when making a new template.

I understand wanting to know if there was a blank facet, yet the information is readily available via the spreadsheet view. As far as each facet having it's own schedule, again, a blank facet could be ignored.
I say this only because when creating a template I may want to apply it to existing stacks and if these stacks have a mixed number of facets, I'm only able to do so if I manually correct multiple cards.
It seems like there is little point in the ability to apply templates to existing stacks, and that either it's best to start with a template (and not make any changes), or apply templates card by card, which gives room for inconsistencies.
At this point I'd rather set my slide show settings to work with only the first 2 facets. And stick with the more old fashion approach.

It's not as simple as you say. If you have a blank side, and we ignore it for scheduling, and then you add something to it, what should happen for scheduling? Worse, what if you make an existing facet blank? What should happen to its schedule and study history? Trashed?
Templates are very useful, but if you have varying numbers of facets, you simply need to be careful to set them up for the most general case, with the most facets.
It is true that if you remove facets from the middle of the note, you will have more problems and templates will be less useful. In that case you are best to get the template right in the beginning.
We will consider whether we should remove empty facets in slideshows, but not for scheduling, which would be complicated.
