Syncing Mac <--> iPhone with a large library

Dear Mental Case-Team,

I've been using Mental Case for several years now and am really glad to have such a great app. Owning an iPhone makes it even more appealing to use MC all the time!

However, I've also been struggling with the sync, time after time. My library is >1GB with lots of pictures, and yes, I want to have it fully on my iPhone. More often than not, the sync simply hangs. I've got not problem with the sync taking its time, it's a large piece of library. But a sync that never finishes, even after 10+ hours, or---if it finishes---tells me that the sync could not be completed is really bad... Sometimes I have the impression that some pictures in the library are "corrupt" whatever that means for MC.

Anyway, my suggestion for MC 2.0:
PLEASE update the syncing and make it more stable, please!

Thanks!

    Hi Tobias,
iCloud syncing is definitely coming later this year, or early 2012 at latest. We need to update the iOS apps to do that, and we can't do that until the Mac app is at 2.0.
We may try to shoehorn in incremental syncs when 2.0 is released. Can't promise anything, but at least then you wouldn't have to keep transferring all that media each time.
    Thanks for the feedback.
    Kind regards,
    Drew

Drew, I was hoping you would respond to Tobias' problem with the sync not completing. I have the same problem. The status bar will get about half way, and then the message "could not complete the sync" comes up.

Since you only mention possible iCloud syncing in response to Tobias, it makes me think that you are aware of these mysterious problems trying to sync a large library.

    Justin,

I thought that I had already posted this here, but unfortunately I cannot find it...

Anyway, this did the trick for me:

I tried to narrow the whole problem down to one single MC-folder but didn't really succeed. The folders that caused the trouble had all quite a view pictures in it. Sometimes it helped to replace a rather large picture with a smaller one.

In the end, I duplicated the notes of the folders under consideration and deleted the old (duplicated) notes. And guess what!? Now it works flawlessly...

    Hope this helps you too

    Best
    Tobias

Yes, a problem like this is often caused by a corrupted image, I'm afraid.

It is true that syncing a large library is not suitable to this type of wifi syncing. For now, you are best to reduce the number of cases you sync, and if you aren't using the lesson, turn the schedule to None in he preferences, to avoid syncing all the lesson notes.

We will be adding iCloud syncing in the near future, and it should work a lot better for syncing large libraries.

    Drew
