Alternatives to iCloud Sync

For most customers, iCloud sync is a great way to use the same Mental Case data across your iOS devices and Macs, but if you have a lot of data (>10000 notes), you might find iCloud sync is too slow to be practical. At that point, you can either stick to a single device for your study, or you could try one of the options below...

  1. Just get sync working on your Macs, and export notes for use on iOS devices
  2. Use one Mac, and export notes occasionally for other devices
  3. Make a full un-syncing copy of your library on each device

Sync working only on Macs

  • Turn on sync switch only in Mental Case on your Macs
  • To put some data on an iOS device (not synced)…
    • Select one or more stacks in the Mac app
    • Choose File > Export…
    • Export as Mental Case 2 Archive format
    • Upload the exported file to Dropbox
    • Open the file in the Dropbox app on iOS device
    • Choose ‘Open In…’ and select Mental Case 2

Use one Mac with exports to other devices

Same as 2, except turn Mental Case sync switch off on all devices

Copy full library between devices (unsynced)

  • Turn off sync switch on all devices
  • For Mac...
    • Click on Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder
    • Enter ~/Library/Containers
    • Zip the folder com.mentalfaculty.mentalcase.mac by right clicking and choosing Compress
    • Move file to another Mac
    • Quit Mental Case on the other Mac
    • Move the com.mentalfaculty.mentalcase.mac folder on the second Mac to your Desktop (if one exists)
    • Unzip the file from the original Mac, and put it in the ~/Library/Containers folder
    • Launch Mental Case
  • For iOS…
    • Click on Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder
    • Enter Library/Containers/com.mentalfaculty.mentalcase.mac/Data/Library/Application Support/Mental Case (All one line, with single space after Application and Mental)
    • Right click on Library.mentalcase2lib and choose Compress
    • Select the zip file and choose File > Get Info
    • Change the full name of the file to Library.mentalcase2libzip
    • Upload file to Dropbox
    • In Dropbox app on iOS, open file, choose Open In… and select Mental Case 2 (BEWARE: This will completely replace any data you have on the device)
